Preparing Video For A Website

Once you have shot and edited your video, you will either want to publish it to a website, upload it to a video sharing website or email it.

A video file may be in any format, but the most common is .avi file.

In this format, the video is generally too big to stream effectively or to email. So you will need to use a video formatting software to compress the video file and add other functionality to support download and playing.

When a video is added to a webpage, you can either do so that it requires Windows Media Player or Quicktime or RealPlayer to launch to view the video, or as is most commonly used today, embed the video in the webpage using Flash plug-in common to most browsers. In this way, the video will play directly in the webpage.

Setting The Video File Options

An example of this type of software is V2F by EasyWebVideo. Using this software you would:

  1. Select your video file
  2. Select Video Settings
    1. Compression rate
    2. Play rate
    3. Enable Audio – Stereo / Mono
  3. Select Player Controls
    1. Select Video player window
    2. Select video player buttons
  4. Add FTP information for upload to website or embedding in email
  5. Choose how to convert the video - Provide Streaming Rate options – Dial up / DSL or Automatic

Converting the Video File

Convert the Video to a format suitable for use on the web – .swf– FLASH. This conversion compresses the video file from e.g 7.5MB to just under 1MB

Now that the file has been prepared, you can now do one of three things: Publish it to your own website, Upload it to a video sharing website or Email it.

Publish to webpage – creates two files:

  1. The flash file [swf]
  2. A paste .txt file with the HTML code to paste into webpage wherever you want the video to appear

Upload to Video Sharing Site - A one click process to create the webpage, adding the video to it

Email – up to 20 recipients.
