| Rich Media is commonly deployed
to dramatise and/or distribute live event presentations.
Multimedia Presentations
Multimedia presentations can be live or recorded. A recorded
presentation may allow interactivity via a navigation system.
A live multimedia presentation may allow interactivity via
interaction with the presenter or performer.
A simple example is a webinar. A visual presentation is supported
by audio; with interaction of the audience through text based
Instant Messenger type panels.
Viewing Rich Media Presentation
Rich media presentations may be viewed:
- Live, in person
- Online using live links or delayed broadcast
- CD-ROM
Live Presentations
Consider for a moment a live audience television program
such as The Oprah Show:
- The live audience interacts with the presenter.
- Guests are interviewed live, and using video links. These
videos are projected onto huge screens on the stage.
- The presenter may also link in to guests using simple
phone calls; making a simple audio interaction.
- Live voting is presented in real time, on screen. Voting
can be a mix of live audience and phone in audience.
These are now common rich media elements used in the production
mix of television shows.
Seminars
Seminars being presented to live audiences are now also
being linked into using video or audio. The remote audience
is also able to participate through chat window and voting
screens.
Projected Media Presentations - media is
presented or projected onto a stage or screen, with or without
accompanying live presentation.
Delayed Interview or Seminar Transmission
- A hugely successful media business has launched in the last
year using replay of interviews and seminars. These are broadcast
using simple dial up audio connections. Although the presentation
is using a single audio media, it is often supplemented with
ebooks downloaded prior to the presentation, and promoted
using audio and video clips.
In this instance one could argue that a rich media is used,
but not multimedia.
Recording interviews and seminars may be done using either
analog or digital electronic media technology.
Digital online multimedia has the distinct advantage in
that it may be downloaded or streamed. Streaming multimedia
may be live or on-demand.
Regardless of the type of rich media presentation, these
formats have common requirements.
Rich Media Presentation Requirements
The key to a successful rich media presentation is accessibility
and control by the end user. It should provide for enhancable
content such as
- Captions
- Audio Descriptions
- Subtitles
- Bookmarking
- Audio controls, Sound, Pause, Replay, Fast-forward etc
- Interoperability of optional functions between players
